Russia will boycott the SA OHE Summit with the EU PSC

by

Russia will boycott today – a rare gesture – the meeting of the UN Security Council and the Political and Security Committee (PSC) of the European Union, a reflection of the continuing rapid deterioration of relations between Moscow and its partners in the United Nations, diplomatic sources said. .

A Russian diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that Moscow’s decision was due to the crisis in Ukraine.

A Western diplomat told AFP that he did not recall any other incident in which Russia had abstained from the work of the UN Security Council following the start of its military offensive in Ukraine on February 24.

The annual informal SA / PSC session had to be held from 2019, due to the new coronavirus pandemic. Today, it is expected to address the interaction of the EU and the UN in countries where the two organizations conduct parallel operations, such as Bosnia, the Central African Republic and Mali.

The EPA is made up of 27 ambassadors. After New York, they will travel to Washington for talks with US officials, according to a diplomat.

Since the start of the war, relations between Moscow and countries or groups of countries in the UN have not stopped deteriorating. Russia, a veto-wielding member of the Security Council, has been excluded from various UN forums, most notably the Human Rights Council.

During a press conference yesterday, the US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council in March, assured that the meetings will continue to be held normally.

At the same time, she expressed satisfaction that the SA had, in its view, recorded “extraordinary success” in trying to “isolate Russia” by the end of February. It is a “significant success,” he insisted. “We managed (…) to condemn Russia at the General Assembly,” he recalled. At the end of February, thanks to its veto power, Moscow was able to avoid a similar sentence in the SA.

“Russia is isolated in the Security Council” and “every time we hold a debate” on it, Mrs. Thomas-Greenfield.
