The supreme leader of the Taliban today asked the Afghans to wear a burqa in public, the Islamic garment that covers the whole body and faceimposing another restriction on women, who have seen their rights shrink since the Islamist movement came to power in Afghanistan.
«They should wear chantri (another name for the burqa) because it is traditional and shows respect», mentions the decree signed by Himbatullah Ahunjada and was presented today by the Taliban government to journalists in Kabul.
«“Women who are neither too young nor too big should cover their face when in front of a man who does not belong to their family.”in order to avoid provoking him, the decree notes.
If they do not have any important work to do outside the home, “it’s better to stay indoors,” he adds.
The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021 promising a more tolerant government than their first regime in 1996-2001. But since then they have restricted the rights of Afghans, especially women and girls, who have been excluded from education and much of the public sector.
