EU talks on 6th sanctions package deadlocked for 5 days: The “thorns” for the embargo on Russian oil

by

No final agreement on 6th package of sanctions talks at Russia at the level of ambassadors of the Member States have been closed, but significant progress on most sanctions and talks will continue at all levels, according to EU sources.

«“The Council is united in the need to adopt the 6th package of sanctions.” as joint sources of the European Commission and the French Presidency of the EU point out. “There is still work to be done in a spirit of solidarity, the guarantees necessary for the terms of oil supply to the Member States which are currently in a very specific situation with regard to the supply from a Russian oil pipeline“, Add the same sources and emphasize:”Contacts at all levels will continue at the beginning of the week in order to reach a comprehensive agreement on the 6th package of sanctions, as soon as possible.».

It is noted that the largest “brake» in reaching an agreement in the 6th package of sanctions is its issue Hungary and Slovakia, which are supplied with oil only through a pipeline from Russia. According to information from AMPE, Hungary is still unhappy with the two extra years (by the end of 2024) proposed for a total embargo on Russian oil. Proportional Slovakia and the Czech Republic seem to be asking for an extension. In addition, many EU Member States are asking for it guarantees from the European Commission for their energy security.

Finally, it is recalled that the initial goal was for the 6th package of sanctions to enter into force on 9 May, something that does not seem to be achieved before the 10 May meeting of the Permanent Representatives of the EU Member States (COREPER).
