A nationwide law guaranteeing abortion did not garner the required majority in the US Senate at a time when that right is at stake in a Supreme Court ruling.
Yesterday’s vote was symbolic, as Democrats do not have 60 of the 100 votes needed to pass the bill, but its result is part of the progressive forces’ broader campaign to protect the right to abortion.
“For the first time in 50 years, a conservative majority, an extreme majority in the Supreme Court is preparing to rule that women do not have control over their own bodies,” Democrat Sen. Chuck Sumer warned in dramatic tone before the vote.
“My body, my choice”
Republicans vehemently opposed the bill, accusing Democrats, led by Mitch McConnell, of wanting to offer “abortions generously,” while Democrats suffered the final blow when Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin voted with the reboot.
The American president announced the outcome of the vote.
“Republicans in Congress – none of whom voted in favor of the bill – have chosen to oppose the right of American women to make the most personal decisions about their bodies, their families, their lives,” the presidential statement said.
Democrats organized the vote after the May 2 draft Supreme Court ruling overturned the landmark Roe v Wade ruling, which guarantees half a century of women’s right to abortion in the United States.
If the Supreme Court overturns the decision, every US state will be free to ban or allow abortions.
About twenty conservative states have already pledged to make abortion illegal.
Shouting “My body, my choice” about the thirty members of the House of Representatives, where the law was passed in September, were present during the vote in the Senate.
Daily demonstrations
Since the revelation of the Supreme Court, groups of protesters have been gathering every night to express their anger in front of the headquarters of the US Supreme Court in Washington, which is now protected by a metal fence. Some protesters also carry out their protests in front of the houses of conservative judges.
Organizations are calling on Americans to demonstrate en masse across the country on May 14 to protect the right to abortion.
Four major marches are taking place in Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and hundreds of rallies across the country.
President Biden has vowed to personally engage in the battle and called on Americans to “choose candidates for the right to abortion” in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, hoping to expand the Democratic majority in the Senate, which would allow legislation to protect access to abortion.
However, this election is considered dangerous for the presidential majority and it is considered very likely that the Democrats will lose their slim majority in Congress.
