Honduran authorities arrested Erlinda Bobadilla, who is said to be the leader of the drug cartel in the Central American country, on Sunday, and a request from Washington for her arrest and extradition was pending against her.
Police have arrested Bobadia following a “violent clash” in which Tito Montes’s son was killed, Honduran police chief Gustavo Sanchez Velasquez said on Twitter. Three other people were arrested, according to Sanchez Velasquez, who did not name them or give further details about the police operation.
US authorities accuse the 62-year-old of being the leader of the powerful Montes gang. The cartel is said to be importing cocaine from Latin America and then exporting it to the United States.
Earlier this month, Washington offered a $ 5 million reward for information leading to the capture of Tito Montes and Juan Carlos Montes Bobadilla. The latter continues to escape capture.
Another of Ms. Bobadilla’s sons, Noah Montes Bobadilla, was arrested in 2017 and extradited to the United States, where he was sentenced to 37 years in prison for drug trafficking.
In April, Honduras extradited former President Juan Orlando to the United States to stand trial for trafficking huge amounts of cocaine. He pleaded not guilty before a judge.
On May 10, former police chief (2012-2013) Juan Carlos “El Tigre” Bonia was also extradited to the United States, where he is charged with drug trafficking on behalf of former President Hernandez.
Honduran authorities have so far extradited at least 30 people to the United States to stand trial for drug trafficking cases.
