A new thriller begins later the surrender of hundreds of Ukrainian fighters who were stranded inside the Azofstal steel plant in Mariupol, as no one knows their future.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, their exact number reaches 959 and all of them have been transferred to territories controlled by Russia.
Ukraine has demanded an exchange of prisoners, but has not provided its own number of fighters believed to have left the plant.
Russia, for its part, claims that the fighters will be treated in accordance with international rules. A senior Russian official has said that there should be no exchange of “Nazi criminals”.
Pro-Russian separatists: The court will decide their fate
The court will decide the fate of Ukrainian fighters who were handed over to the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, said a leader of the pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
According to the Russian news agency Tass, the leader of the Donetsk separatists, Dennis Pusilinstated that “if the opponent has laid down his arms, the court decides on his future fate.”
However, he said those found to be “neo-Nazi war criminals” would have to face an international tribunal.
Pushilin added that top executives at the steel plant are still inside the plant and have not yet surrendered, Reuters reported, citing local media.
