Nearly 1.5 million pounds sold in a Chinese jar of the Qianlong Dynasty left in a home kitchen

An “extremely rare” 18th-century Chinese vase bought in the 1980s for a few hundred pounds and left in a kitchen sold for 44 1,449,000.

According to the BBC, the gilded vase, 60 cm in size with blue glass, silver was created for the court of Emperor Qianlong.

Decorated with cranes and bats, it was estimated that it would be sold at auction for 100,000-150,000 pounds.

The jar belonged to a surgeon who handed it over to his son who had not realized its value.

Berkshire-based Dreweatts Auctioneers said it was only when an antique visitor spotted it that its true value and history were revealed.

Sold to a foreign buyer by phone. The starting price was 200 1,200,000 with the bidder paying 1,449,000 including the buyer premium.

Mark Newstead from the auction house said: “We are thrilled with this excellent result. We have seen widespread interest from China, Hong Kong, the United States and the United Kingdom, which has resulted in very competitive bids.”
