Stacey Park Milbern was a queer, Korean-American disability activist who co-founded the Disability Justice Movement and dedicated her life to advocating for marginalized communities. In honor of Asia Pacific American Heritage Month, today Doodle celebrates Stacey Park Milbern’s Heritage’s 35th birthday.
Milbern was born in 1987 in Seoul, South Korea. He grew up in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and began defending justice for people with disabilities at the age of 16. Noticing the lack of advocacy for people with disabilities, LGBTQ + and people of color, he teamed up with other activists in 2005 to think disability justice — a framework to ensure that the prospects of traditionally marginalized groups within the community of people with disabilities are not out of the fight for the rights of people with disabilities.
At the age of 24, Milbern moved to the Bay Area of California, where she worked tirelessly to organize, write, and talk about the movement, and became Program Director at the Center for Independent Living. In 2014, Milbern was appointed to the Chair of the Committee on Persons with Mental Disabilities and served as an adviser to the national administration.
“I want to leave a legacy of people with disabilities knowing that we are strong and beautiful because of who we are, not despite that,” said Stacey Park Milbern.
From advocating for national law to building community through the Disability Justice Culture Club, Stacey Milbern has always had big dreams and lived up to her values.
Happy 35th Birthday, Stacey Park Milbern.
