Welcoming the two leaders, Joe Biden said he strongly supports the two countries joining the alliance.
“This is a historic event, a milestone in European security. “Two states with a long tradition of neutrality will join the world’s strongest defense alliance,” said White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
Turkey says “no” to the two countries’ accession to NATO, urging Sweden to stop supporting Kurdish fighters and to lift bans on certain arms sales to Turkey.
Sullivan told reporters Wednesday that US officials were confident that Turkey’s concerns could be addressed. “I think we’ll be fine,” Joe Biden told reporters.
Erdogan, however, has not yet given the green light.
