How China is deploying Western military know-how through Europe

by

Universities and researchers across Europe are collaborating with Chinese military institutions, according to China Science Investigation, an international research network by the Correctiv and Follow the Money news networks, along with the Deutschlandfunk radio station, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Deutsche Welle and other European information.

The research records about 3,000 collaborations of European scientists with their Chinese colleagues from universities related to the military sector. These are usually science projects, but they could also be used for military purposes. The journalistic investigation identified almost 350 scientific publications with German participation.

Didi Kirsten Tatlow, a distinguished journalist and expert on China, believes that the communist leadership seeks to gain important knowledge through scientific cooperation, which helps to strengthen its power: “I am 100% sure that Germany is too naive about cooperation with China “.

German security circles are moving in the same direction, warning the universities that they are naively cooperating with China. They even argue that the communist leadership is particularly interested in areas such as information technology, aerospace and agricultural technology, as well as artificial intelligence.

Cooperation with the National Defense Technology University (NUDT), which is under the control of the Central Military Commission, the highest military executive body in the People’s Republic of China, is considered particularly problematic.

According to international journalistic research, at least 300 publications have been made since 2000 in collaboration with German researchers and the Chinese University of Defense Technology. In the first places are the University of Hamburg, the Max Planck Institute, the University of Magdeburg and the University of Bonn. The subject of two indicative publications was the tracking of individuals and the improvement of robotic navigation systems.

Reacting to the results of international research, German educational institutions refer to internal control mechanisms. Among them is the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which also funds Chinese researchers. However, the general secretary of the Eno Aufderheide Foundation admits that “we can not rule out the possibility that people who have acquired know-how through joint scientific research may later end up in research areas related to the armed forces.”

The international survey involved 30 journalists from 7 countries and a total of 11 pensions, which evaluated more than 350,000 scientific papers of the last 20 years.
