Panel SA: Airlines say that pollution rate in Guarulhos will violate international agreements

by

The airline sector reacted to the news of the approval of the Guarulhos bill that establishes the collection of a pollution tax in Cumbica.

Abear, Alta, Iata and Jurcaib signed a manifesto this Friday (27) to take a stand against the creation of the so-called TPA (Environmental Preservation Tax) for planes that land and take off at the international airport, the largest in the country.

According to the entities, the proposal invades an issue of exclusive competence of the Union and may violate international agreements to which Brazil is a signatory.

“Sector public policies must always be defined by the federal government, through these agreements”, says the manifesto.

The project was approved by councilors this Friday (27) and must be sanctioned by the mayor to start in 2023. According to the city hall, the charge aims to mitigate the environmental impacts of air pollution and noise from turbines.

The associations also claim that environmental issues are a priority on the sector’s agenda and that the industry has already adopted measures to mitigate emissions. “As a result, since 1990, carbon emissions per passenger have been reduced by 50%,” the text reads.

The fee will be 3 UFGs (Fiscal Units of Guarulhos) for each ton of total weight of the aircraft measured before takeoff, that is, it covers fuel, cargo, passengers, luggage and the plane itself. Each UFG is equivalent to R$ 3.9381.
