Datafolha: Voter of Ciro is against guns and cares more about the economy when voting

by

Voters who intend to choose pre-candidate Ciro Gomes (PDT) in the October election are mostly against the arming of the population and care a lot about the country’s economic situation when deciding whether to vote for president.

They have a high level of trust in electronic voting machines, yet half think that the Armed Forces should participate in the count. They also declare higher rates of vaccination against Covid-19 with a booster dose and think that the pandemic is partially under control.

In general, supporters of the pedetista have opinions on the economy, weapons, pandemic and electronic voting machines that orbit between supporters of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL), but are closer to the opinions of the left-wing electorate. .

See below what people who see Ciro as the first option think about these four themes and understand his profile, in general whiter, more educated and with higher income, standing out among civil servants and the unemployed who are not looking for a job.

The subjects were questioned in the latest Datafolha survey, carried out with 2,556 people over 16 years old in 181 cities across the country last Wednesday (25th) and Thursday (26th). The survey was commissioned by Sheet and is registered with the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) under number BR-05166/2022.

The total margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points. It is important to consider, however, that it increases when considering only those who will vote for each candidate. Within this sample, there are 1,234 in favor of Lula, 693 in favor of Bolsonaro and 179 in favor of Ciro, who therefore has a greater margin.

1. ECONOMY

Ciro’s voters are generally unhappy with the economy: 77% believe that the country’s situation has worsened in recent months and 56%, their own situation. The numbers are much higher than those of Bolsonaro supporters (27% and 16%), but lower than those of Lula (84% and 70%).

The difference is that nearly nine out of ten of his supporters say this issue has a lot or a little influence on their vote for president. That share drops to around eight out of ten in the case of its rivals.

Ciro’s supporters also receive less Auxílio Brasil, the successor to Bolsa Família (only 12% report being beneficiaries), and most do not think this is important in deciding the vote.

2. WEAPONS

At this point, the pedetista’s supporters are closer to those of Lula – 83% disagree that “Brazilian society would be safer if people carried guns to protect themselves from violence” and 85%, that it is “necessary to facilitate the access of people the weapons”.

3. PANDEMIC

Ciro attracts Brazilians who say they have above-average vaccination rates. The share of voters who claim to have been immunized is 98%, the same as Lula’s supporters, but they report a higher percentage of booster doses (66%, against 58% for PT).

They have more moderate views on the pandemic. The vast majority believe that it is partially controlled (84%), while among Lula and Bolsonaro voters this position is more diluted to “out of control” and “totally controlled”, respectively.

The same happens when asked about the fear of the disease: 42%, the largest share of their supporters, responded that they were “a little afraid”. Most, however, are opposed to the current president’s performance in this regard, with 61% who rate his work as bad or terrible.

4. ELECTRONIC VOTES

The survey shows that 85% of those who intend to vote for Ciro trust a little or a lot in electronic voting machines – against 58% among those who tend to choose Bolsonaro. Therefore, most of them (55%) do not believe in the chance of fraud in the elections, as the current president says.

Despite this, 61% of supporters of the pedetista think that Bolsonaro’s attacks on the judiciary and his threats to the elections should be taken seriously by the country’s institutions and about half (47%) agree fully or partially that the Armed Forces should participate in the vote count.

5. PROFILE

Ciro’s voters are more educated —5% of those who have completed higher education spontaneously cited him as their first option, against 2% of the total — and whiter (3%). It also attracts public servants (6% of this group say they prefer it).

The most expressive income range in his case is the one that earns from five to ten minimum wages per month (4%), while Lula has the poorest portions and Bolsonaro, the richest.
