The administration of US President Joe Biden has lifted restrictions imposed by his predecessor, Donald Trump, on flights to Cuba. The information was published last Wednesday (1st), according to an order from the US Department of Transportation, reported the Russian agency TASS.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken addressed the department with a request to remove all restrictions on civil aviation on flights between the United States and Cuba, which were implemented at the request of the Department of State in October 2019, January 2020 and August 2020.
According to the head of US diplomacy, such a step is necessary in the context of “measures to support the Cuban people announced on May 16, as well as in the interests of US foreign policy”.
In October 2019, Washington banned flights to Cuba (except Havana) for US airlines operating scheduled, non-charter flights.
Later, in January 2020, these restrictions were expanded and US authorities banned US airlines from operating charter flights to all Cuban airports except Havana. At the same time, restrictions were imposed on the number of charter flights to the Cuban capital.
Finally, in August 2020, Washington announced the decision to ban virtually all charter flights to Cuba.
On May 16, 2022, the State Department announced the decision to lift restrictions on remittances to Cuban families, allow money to be sent “to support independent companies” and the private sector, and expand the embassy in Havana to increase the issuance of seen.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry called this decision a step in the right direction.
