Commodities Shuttle: World wheat production drops for the first time in four years

by

At a time when wheat is becoming one of the main problems in world food, the Amis (Agricultural Market Information System), an FAO cereal market monitor, points to the first fall in wheat production in the last four years old.

Problems in Ukraine, Australia, Morocco and India are expected to push world production down to 771 million tonnes this year, 1% less than last year, Amis reported on Thursday (2).

The high prices of the product will also hold back world consumption, which drops to 769 million tons. The fall will occur both in the industrialization of cereal and in the production of feed.

Lower production in Ukraine, Argentina, Australia and India, in addition to export bans by some countries, will push world trade down to 189 million tonnes this season.

The IGC (International Grains Council) price monitoring indicates that wheat has changed by 56% in the last 12 months. In this same period, corn rose 13%; soy, 14%; and rice fell 6%.

The reduction in food supply and high prices caused the number of the population in the famine stage to increase greatly. At the beginning of the year, there were 570 thousand. Now, there are already 750 thousand, according to Amis.

Among the 92 countries monitored, 23 of them are already at high risk of hunger. The Ukrainian War further worsened the situation of the world’s population.

In 2019, 158 million people in the world faced acute hunger. With the pandemic and the Ukrainian war, that number could rise to 323 million.

High prices have driven inflation, whose annual rate is already above 15% in 40 countries. For every 1 percentage point increase in the inflation rate, 10 million people fall into extreme poverty, a study shows.

The numbers from Brazil indicate the high costs that wheat has brought to consumers’ pockets.

According to data released by Fipe (Economic Research Institute Foundation) this Thursday, the bagel has already accumulated a high of 22% in the last 12 months. Wheat flour rose 23%, interfering with the costs of wheat derivatives.

Coffee The harvest of the 2022/23 crop reaches 18.5% of the area to be harvested, according to Safras & Mercado. Since the consultancy estimates a production of 61.1 million bags of 60 kilos this year, 11 million would already be in warehouses.

cafe 2 Arabica coffee is harvested at a slower pace, reaching 13% of the area. In the case of conilon, the advance is 28%, according to the consultancy.

Inflation The global rise in food has raised the annual rate of inflation to 11.5% in OECD countries, the organization said on Thursday.

less wheat Ukraine, embroiled in war with Russia, is expected to harvest 19 million tonnes of wheat this season, down from 33 million tonnes in the previous season, according to the country’s cerealists’ association.
