Senate approves national holiday in honor of Sister Dulce

by

On Thursday (18), the Senate Education Committee approved the creation of a national holiday in honor of Santa Dulce do Pobres. The forecast is for the celebration to be on March 13, the day of the nun’s death in 1992. This would be the country’s tenth national holiday.

“This proposition, therefore, aims to honor the life of a Bahian woman, a Brazilian woman, a saint who dedicated herself to caring for the poor, welcoming everyone with great love and dedication in the hope of seeing them in good health and living with more dignity. “, justifies the text.

Bill 4.028/2019, authored by senator Ângelo Coronel (PSD-BA), is terminative and will not pass the plenary. For starters, it depends on validation by the Chamber of Deputies and, if approved, goes to President Jair Bolsonaro’s sanction (no party).

Sister Dulce was canonized in October 2019, 27 years after her death. She is the first saint born in Brazil and is known as ‘Anjo Bom da Bahia’. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to caring for the poor and the sick, being known for transforming a chicken coop into a hospital.

She had two miracles recognized by the Vatican. The first, in 2021, would have been in Sergipe, where prayers in his name would have stopped the bleeding of a woman who suffered for 18 hours after giving birth to her second child. In 2014, a maestro from Bahia came back to see after asking for the intercession of the nun.
