The ad of used cardboard boxes being sold for R$1 went viral on social media earlier this week. Thousands of Internet users reacted to the image, outraged by the sale of the item, which is usually offered for free.
The shared image shows a stack of cardboard boxes, of different sizes, gathered in a space and with a sign advertising “empty box R$ 1.00 each”. A publication of the image made on the social network Twitter, on Sunday night (5), received, until early Tuesday afternoon (7), more than 130 thousand likes and 14 thousand shares.
The sign was placed in a store of the wholesale supermarket chain Price Baixo Meio a Meio, in Belém, capital of Pará.
The establishment informed the Sheet that the sign was improperly placed in the place where the boxes were. The boxes in the image are not sold, but there are others, larger, that contain eggs, also for R$ 1.
“These boxes are offered free of charge to customers who choose not to use plastic bags,” the company said. On social media, netizens linked the charge to the economic crisis in the country.
The establishment also said that the egg cartons are highly sought after by customers and companies interested in using them for moving or even storing materials.
“We are sorry for what happened and we have already guided the store which was with the communication to correctly inform the destination of the boxes”, said the company.
