Commodity Shuttle: After a difficult period, pig farming is waiting for better days

by

Pig farming awaits better times for the coming weeks. There are already signs at the beginning of the month. The Cepea (Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics) found, this Tuesday (7), that the carcass kilo was R$ 8.65, accumulating a high of 9.1% in the month.

Valdomiro Ferreira Junior, president of APCS (Paulista Association of Swine Breeders) says that “we believe in this improvement and it will come for several factors”.

Among the causes of the sector’s price recovery are an improvement in external demand in the second half of the year, a reduction in supply and a change in the presentation of pork at retail by several slaughterhouses.

Sales should improve as of July, mainly for the foreign market. The offer, however, is smaller. Many producers, due to the poor profitability of the sector recently, left the activity. Others, due to high production costs, reduced the supply of pork, according to the entity’s president.

Another important point, he highlights, is that many slaughterhouses are adopting the sale of pork in special cuts. This adds value to the product and improves the meatpackers’ revenues, which also start to remunerate producers more.

Ferreira also highlights more comfortable prices for corn from July onwards, since the off-season should increase the supply of cereal on the market.

For the president of the entity, the return of profitability to the sector is important for the continuity of the activity. At times, we even sold an arroba of meat for less than a sack of corn. Normally, the price of protein is worth at least two and a half bags of cereal, he says.

The current price per kilo-carcass of swine is 23% lower than it was six months ago, according to APCS quotations.

cross talk José Mário Schreiner, vice president of the CNA (Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil) and MDB deputy for Goiás, reported on social media that he needed to look to the future and fight new battles.

cross talk 2 He also stated that agribusiness demanded that he assume more responsibilities in the CNA. The speech was understood by many as a possible move to the presidency of the entity, in place of João Martins da Silva Junior, elected until December 2025.

Cross talk 3 This Tuesday (7), the CNA released a note in which it reaffirms that the mandate of the current board runs until 2025, and that “any pronouncement that is not based on the current statute is presented as inappropriate and irresponsible”.
