President Jair Bolsonaro took to the meeting with US President Joe Biden, a request for the United States to review the quotas for imports of Brazilian steel, one of the main demands of the country’s industry, and the expectation is that the matter will move forward. soon, two Brazilian government sources told Reuters.

Although there was no concrete development, Bolsonaro would have left the bilateral meeting on Thursday (9) with the promise of the US president that the issue will be analyzed in technical meetings between the two countries in the coming months.

The matter was discussed during the private meeting of the two presidents where, in addition to Bolsonaro and Biden, only the Brazilian Chancellor, Carlos França, and the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, were present, in addition to the translators.

Sought after, the Itamaraty did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter.

Quotas for importing Brazilian steel were created during Donald Trump’s administration, in 2018, and establish that Brazil is entitled to export part of the product without import taxes, but the Brazilian government claims a return to the previous profile, in that there was no taxation.

At current values, Brazil is entitled to export a quota of 3.5 million tons of steel without the surcharge, which reaches 25%. According to sources heard by Reuters, the country currently exports to the US amounts close to the current quota, which prevents the expansion of Brazilian business.
