The journalistic team of “Wherever Greece is” sets sail for the Dodecanese and today, Monday 27 October at 2:40 p.m., it disembarks in Kalymnos. From the studio, Yiannis Tsimitselis coordinates.
In Kalymnos, there are only a few sponge fishermen left who, despite the times, plow the Aegean to catch the now scarce sponges. We met a veteran sponger, Pantelis Georgantis, a keen diver of Kalymnos, who, although he has been struck by divers’ disease, still dives. We visited one of the sponge processing and marketing workshops and recorded the entire process on camera.

The birth rate may have decreased in the rest of Greece, but the Kalymnians still maintain a tradition of years and create large families. On the island with approximately 18,000 inhabitants, there are approximately 2,200 large families with over 4 children each, while families with three children exceed 1,000.
The landfill of Kalymnos near the port is still a serious health problem. It is one of the few uncontrolled landfills left in Greece, with all kinds of household, urban, waste, rubble, furniture… And while the definitive management has been initiated, the temporary solution of transferring the garbage to the Kos Landfill has encountered objections from the Municipality of Kos.
