President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Monday (13) that the price of gasoline should fall by R$2 and that of diesel by R$1 if Congress approves measures aimed at reducing fuel taxes.
The chief executive said he believed the proposals would be approved this week, but did not give details of the calculations used to arrive at the figures presented.
“The forecast is to drop around R$ 2 a liter of gasoline and to fall around R$ 1 in the price of diesel”, he said in an interview with CBN Recife.
The representative referred to two proposals underway in the Legislature. One of them limits the ICMS tax rate on fuel charged by governors to 17%; the other authorizes the federal government to compensate states that have reduced ICMS tax on diesel and cooking gas to zero.
“Let’s talk about Rio de Janeiro: ICMS is 34% and will go up to 17%. I don’t know how much it is in Pernambuco, but the average in Brazil is 29%, 30%. what happens in this matter: there will be a huge decrease. This, of course, we will feel at the end of the line, the decrease in prices”, he said.
Bolsonaro said that governors need to understand that the measures will benefit the population, despite representing a loss of revenue for state funds.
“You have to think about the people, it is not the state that is losing. Who is losing is the people who are paying dearly”, he said.
