A group of Brazilian economists will publish, this Tuesday (13), a manifesto in support of the candidacy of former president Lula (PT) for the presidency. Entitled “Movement of Economists for Democracy and Against Barbarism”, the document gathered around 1,150 signatures.
Among the signatories are Leda Paulani, professor of Economics at USP, Clélio Campolina, former Minister of Science, Luiz Gonzaga Belluzzo, professor at Unicamp, Senator Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN) and Rogério Studart, former executive director of World Bank.
They say that “the government of Jair Bolsonaro [PL] implemented a self-destructive project” and that “the dismantling of the national economy is notorious.” The group also defends a review of labor and social security reforms and strengthening with Mercosur.
“We are clear that Brazil’s return to a path of civilizing progress necessarily involves the election of the Lula-Alckmin ticket in the first round of the general elections”, the document concludes.
Adroaldo Quintela, from the Brazilian Association of Economists for Democracy, Ricardo Bielschowsky, professor at UFRJ, João Hallak Neto, counselor at Corecon-RJ and Ladislau Dowbor, professor at PUC-SP, also sign the text.
