Jesse Williams Says ‘Greys Anatomy’ Wouldn’t Survive Without Ellen Pompeo

by

Actor Jesse Williams, 40, who played Dr. Jackson Avery in “Grey’s Anatomy” said the series is unlikely to survive without leading lady Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), 52. She has already opened up the possibility of leaving the ABC series and said she is trying to convince the production that the drama should reach the end.

“I don’t know, it would be a different show. She’s the heart of this show. She’s Grey. So unlikely,” William told Access Hollywood. He added: “But then again, I don’t work there anymore. So it doesn’t matter what I think.”

Williams joined the 6th season of Grey’s Anatomy and dropped in 2021 after 12 seasons, though it recently returned for the Season 18 finale.

Pompeo has been on the popular medical drama since its rookie season in 2005. Recently, she offered a cryptic response when talking about the series, potentially going on without her, saying, “We’ll see, we’ll see.”

“Trying to reinvent the show and continually trying to reinvent the show is the challenge right now, and listen, the show speaks to a lot of people, and young people love the show,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

She said the series has inspired so many generations of healthcare professionals. “So I think for young people, it’s really good content and we’re going to try to keep it for young people, not necessarily with me, but beyond me,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo also openly discussed his desire to end the series completely in an interview with Insider in December of last year. “I feel like I’m the super naive one who keeps saying, ‘What’s the story, what story are we going to tell? Ellen? Makes a gazillion dollars,'” he said.

This January it was announced that Pompeo will return for the show’s 19th season.
