Lithuania legally bans the import of Russian gas into the country
Its parliament Lithuania approved one tonight law with which the import of Russian gas is prohibitedin order to reduce the country’s energy dependence on Moscow.
In the spring, Lithuania, which is a member of the EU and NATO, stopped buying Russian gas through pipelines or through a terminal for LNG (liquefied natural gas). The new law allows the use of the gas transmission system and LNG terminals exclusively for countries that do not pose a threat to Lithuania’s national security.
The law, however, allows this infrastructure to be used by Russian companies transporting gas to the Kaliningrad region.
After gaining independence from the former USSR in 1990, Lithuania remained dependent on Russian gas until it leased an LNG terminal in 2014. In March, it launched a new pipeline connecting the three Baltic states to the European natural gas network. through neighboring Poland.
