At least 20 people have been killed in a landslide at a railway construction site in northeastern India, the country’s military has said. Investigations are ongoing to locate dozens of others who are missing.

Most of the victims were reservists working on this railway line in the state of Manipur.

According to the army, 18 people have been found alive, but 15 soldiers and 29 civilians are missing.

Rescuers are digging in the mud and removing stones, searching for survivors, said army spokesman Sumit Kumar Sarma.

“The loss of human life, including that of members of the armed forces, is a very sad event,” the head of state, N. Biren Singh, said in a Twitter post.

Northeast India, an isolated region, has been hit by heavy rains in recent weeks that have caused landslides and floods.
