It’s the first month in history that the EU imported more LNG from the US than via pipeline from Russia
For the first time in the annals it is officially recorded that the EU introduced more natural gas from the USA than from Russia
The European Union for the first time in its history imported more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US than via the Russian gas pipeline in June data, International Energy Agency (IEA) President Fatih Birol said today. who called on the countries of the European Union to work on reducing demand and prepare for a difficult winter.
“Russia’s recent sharp cuts in gas flows to the EU mean this is the 1st month on record that the EU imported more LNG from the US than via pipeline from Russia,” Fatih Birol wrote in a post on Twitter, noting that “declining Russian supply calls for efforts to reduce demand in the EU to prepare for a difficult winter”
The head of the International Energy Organization sees a return to nuclear energy as a possible solution to the problem, which he points out will depend on the decisions of the governments of European countries.
Fatih also points out that “nuclear power has a unique opportunity to make a comeback amid the global energy crisis, soaring fossil fuel prices, energy security challenges and heightened climate ambitions” “But whether this will happen, it will depend on governments and industry.”
