Rising prices for basic necessities are on the rise in Italy. A survey by the consumer association Federconsumatori shows that flour and bread have increased by 38% and 33% respectively over the last five months.
Wholemeal bread even cost 3.81 euros per kilo.
“Under the impetus of rising raw materials and energy costs, the accuracy of food items is becoming increasingly worrying,” said Federconsumatori.
The Italian bakers, at the same time, emphasize that the increases in flour reached 85%.
In fact, a special question will be submitted to the Parliament and the Senate to determine whether this is a phenomenon of scandal. The Italian Consumers’ Association called for controls in both the food and fuel sectors.
The increase in bread, experts explain, is also due to the fact that Italy produces only 35% of the wheat it needs. All the rest is imported (mainly from Ukraine and Russia) and this means that the price increases are even higher, due to the transport of the product.
