Dealing with double-digit inflation has become part of the routine of Brazilians, who have reduced purchasing power. In the 12 months through May, the IPCA (National Index of Consumer Prices), calculated by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), accumulated a high of 11.73%.
With rising inflation, impacted mainly by expenses with the transport and food group, each month a new essential item becomes a villain in the basic food basket, such as milk, which reaches almost R$ 10 per liter in supermarkets. Soy oil, coffee, carrot, potato and tomato also occupied prominent places in 2022.
The rise in prices spread to food and other essential items: in the 12-month period up to May, basic food basket inflation is around 27%, according to a study by professors of the economics course at PUC-PR (Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná) .
The successive increases in fuel prices put pressure on the cost of living. When gasoline, ethanol and diesel increase, other prices also rise and even those who only walk or cycle feel the reflection in their pockets. The weight of fuel in Brazil’s official inflation index broke the 8% range in May, which shows a greater impact on Brazilian spending in recent months.
No wonder, services such as transportation by app and air travel tickets became more expensive.
According to analysts, a combination of factors made inflation gain strength throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. There was an increase in administered prices, such as fuel and electricity, food shortages and disruptions in the global chain of industrial inputs. Inflationary pressure in Brazil was also intensified by the devaluation of the real.
