The search for a job caused thousands of São Paulo residents to get up, this Wednesday (13), in a queue at the hotel sector Job Fair, in the Liberdade neighborhood, downtown São Paulo.
The action is organized by Sinthoresp (Union of Workers in Hotels Bars Restaurants in São Paulo) and offers 724 vacancies in 17 hotels in the city of São Paulo. The average starting salary ranges from R$1,230 to R$1,630.
The line of candidates, which started at the door of the entity’s headquarters, reached the corner of Rua Taguá. According to the union, by early afternoon more than 700 people had already been served.
These are people who are trying to find a place in the job market, or even a change of area. According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the country has more than 10.6 million unemployed.
Receptionist Suzana Silva de Menezes Guerra, 39, currently works in the food industry, but wants to change areas and is looking for an opportunity in the hotel industry.
She arrived at the site around 6:30 am and says she has already met dozens of people. She waited nearly two hours for her to come through the service. Carioca, Suzana has lived in São Paulo since 2019 and says she has just completed a technical course in the hotel reception area.
“I’ve worked a lot as a freelancer, but now I’m trying to get a registered job. As it’s an area that had a lot of employees, I’m confident I’ll get a job”, he says.
Among the opportunities at the fair are vacancies for young apprentices, cleaning assistants, maids, waiters, messengers and receptionists, who do not require experience or a minimum level of education.
For positions in the administrative and maintenance areas, the candidate must have experience in the role. All vacancies are effective.
In all, about 2,600 passwords were distributed. Of this total, 1,200 candidates must pass the screening by 5:00 pm this Wednesday. The other calls for those who managed to remove the password will be divided between Thursday (14) and Friday (15).
The action involves major hotel chains, such as Accor, Atlantica, Blue Tree, Ca´d´Oro, Estanplaza, Hilton, IHG, Intercity, L´Hotel, Meliá, Palácio Tangará, Panamby, Renaissance, Slaviero, Tivoli and Unique.
Candidates go through a screening process, which consists of updating and printing their CVs. Afterwards, they are served at the counters of the companies that offer the vacancies.
According to Darly Abreu, operational director of the Sinthoresp hotel school, the selection process will be the responsibility of each company. The expectation is that those selected will be informed within ten days about the hiring.
For those who do not get the vacancy at this time, the curriculum will be forwarded to an internal system called Bolsa de Empregos. “Currently, the category of bars and restaurants in São Paulo has almost 5,000 open positions. In other words, these people have a high chance of being employed in a period of up to 30 days”, says Abreu.
