The impact of the great fire in the region of Rua 25 de Março already causes the risk of layoffs to workers of stores that had to close their doors in recent days, while the possibility of collapse of the building destroyed by the fire is still being evaluated.
Ricardo Patah, president of the Trade Workers Union of São Paulo and of the UGT central, says that 3,000 workers are at risk of losing their jobs.
He says the idea is to negotiate with employers the alternative of agreements to avoid cuts, such as anticipation of vacations, holidays and bank hours.
“We have two newsstands in the region, with union directors and lawyers to assist the workers. We also want to address the issue of safety. It is unimaginable that this should happen in a city like São Paulo, it needs to be safe”, says Patah.
