The scenario of the complete interruption of natural gas from Russia has also been predicted
“Our government has proceeded with interventions to ensure the energy security of our country, even in the exceptional case of a complete interruption of the flow natural gas from Russia”. This was emphasized, among other things, in statements he made tonight in Patras, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekasconcluding his visit to Achaia as head of a multi-member government echelon.
As Kostas Skrekas explained, “ensuring energy security will be done by doubling the capacity of Revythoussa’s storage capacity, and a floating tank has already been floated, which ensures more natural gas storage space.”
At the same time, he said that “it is possible to receive two ships with LNG at the same time and thus ensure that, in the event that natural gas from Russia is reduced, we can replace it with liquefied natural gas”.
Also, the Minister of Energy and Environment said that “we have given directions to PPC and it will double the production of electricity from lignite in the next period of time, and at the same time we have the possibility for five natural gas plants to utilize diesel for the production of electricity, because it’s dual fuel.” Furthermore, Kostas Skrekas pointed out that he is talking with his Italian counterpart, “to store in the underground warehouses of Italy strategic reserves of natural gas, which we will receive with a reverse flow, through the TAP natural gas pipeline, as long as this need”.
“So”, he continued, “as a government, we have progressed in the axis of shielding against the case of a disruption of the flow of natural gas from Russia, but also in ensuring affordable energy prices, through the ceiling we have put in the part of electricity generation and we recover the surplus profits of the producers at the source’.
Already, as he noted, “in the first five days of operation of the mechanism, we have recovered 130 million euros and we estimate that we will recover over 400 million euros in the first month of operation of the emergency mechanism, for which Greece was the first to receive approval from the European Commission Competition”. And of course, he added, “we have also put an indirect ceiling on the retail price, absorbing 80% to 85% of the increase, removing the readjustment clause from August 1 onwards, ensuring for all households, regardless of income, for all housing , main and non-main, and for the total monthly consumption, that we will absorb 80% to 85% of the increase and thus they will have much lower electricity bills in the next period of time”.
Also, as he said, “we do the same for small and medium-sized professionals, as well as for farmers, where we absorb from 80% to 90% of the increase, through the indirect ceiling we put on the retail price”.
Speaking afterwards to ND executives, at the offices of the governing committee of the electoral district of Achaia, in Patras, he underlined that “Greece took the lead in taking measures, since we started to subsidize electricity bills last September”, while, as he added, “we established the fund energy transition and we are driving there the revenues from pollutant auctions, as well as the surplus profits from renewable energy sources”.
He also emphasized that “Greece has given the most money, in proportion to its GDP, in terms of subsidies to support households and businesses against the energy crisis” and explained: “In July alone we gave 722 million euros and up to now we have allocated five billion euros to support the electricity bills of households and businesses”.
Regarding the tour of the multi-member government echelon, Kostas Skrekas said that “we met the professional bodies and representatives of scientific associations, we talked with them and informed them about what we have planned to do in the next period of time in order to shield the country us in terms of supply adequacy, but also in ensuring affordable electricity prices”.
Furthermore, he said that “we informed them about a series of interventions that we are preparing in infrastructure, in order to support Patras and Achaia and in this way ensure that jobs will be created and the local economy will be supported”.
In fact, as Kostas Skrekas characteristically mentioned, “the region is a priority for our government, because the development of the country starts from the region”, adding that “the place must be supported and will be supported a lot by our government”.
