Two pro-democracy manifestos are in articulation; know which

by

Resistance to attacks by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on the electoral system took shape in two manifestos that will be read at ceremonies scheduled for August 11, at the USP Law School (University of São Paulo), in the center of the capital. paulista.

The first of them, whose content and signatures were published on the institution’s website this Tuesday (26), appeared spontaneously on the initiative of former students from Largo de São Francisco and refers to the famous Letter to Brazilians of 1977.

That year, representatives of the academic community also read in Largo de São Francisco a manifesto in repudiation of the military dictatorship, hence the initiative to make a new edition of the letter, explains Celso Campilongo, director of the USP Law School.

Among the signatories of the current version of the letter are Arminio Fraga, economist and former president of the Central Bank, Candido Botelho Bracher, former president of Itaú, José Guimarães Monforte, former chairman of the Board of Directors of Banco do Brasil, and José Olympio Pereira, former president of Credit Suisse in Brazil. In addition to them, jurists, academics, artists and other opinion makers also sign the document.

The letter can still be signed on the USP Law School website.

The other manifesto is the result of an articulation of business entities, the main one being Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo), and must also be endorsed by other civil society organizations.

This second document is now scheduled to be published in the country’s main newspapers on August 11, and its content is still being revised.

Fiesp has been committed to providing support in the business area to the pro-democracy manifestos. On Tuesday, the federation confirmed that business entities are seeking to increase the number of signatures for the second letter and reaffirmed its commitment to democracy.

Although the content of the first manifesto was made public earlier, business entities decided to join forces with USP alumni. The documents will be read at two ceremonies on the San Francisco Square on August 11th.

The entities’ manifesto will be read at the first event of the day, at 10 am, in the Noble Hall of the institution. The new “Letter to Brazilians” will be read at 11:30 am, in the college courtyard.

The choice of August 11 also refers to the creation of legal courses in Brazil and is also the name of the academic center of the Faculty of Law of the University of São Paulo.
