- The result reflects the rise in oil prices and higher margins in the sale of fuels and natural gas.

US GDP disappoints, Amazon and Apple don’t
Thursday was busy in the US. The day was marked by the release of the 2nd quarter GDP below market forecasts and by results from Amazon and Apple that positively surprised analysts.
Let’s do it by steps:
GDP: the sum of all the riches produced in the country fell 0.9% compared to the same period in 2021. Analysts consulted by Reuters estimated an increase of 0.5%. Compared to the previous quarter, the decline was 0.2%the second retreat in a row.
- The drop was driven by companies’ inventories, still impacted by the effects of the pandemic, which eliminated 2 percentage points from the indicator.
- The unexpected drop fueled expectations of recession and a lower interest rate hike in the country, which took away the strength of the dollar against other currencies.
In companies:
- Apple posted profit and revenue above projections. iPhone sales showed resilience in a downturn scenario and lessened the impacts that the company had with the lockdowns in China. Shares rose 3% in the aftermarket.
- Amazon had better-than-expected revenue despite posting its second straight quarter of loss. The company said it was managing to cut costs, which helped boost shares 13% in the aftermarket.
Did you see this? Speaking of Amazon, a report by a Kindle owner, the company’s ebook reader, went viral on Twitter.
- The ants invaded the device of the writer Mariana Vieira and moved in such a way that they bought books digitally. See the video.
Take a break: The strength of TikTok
TikTok’s influence is starting to become increasingly clear outside the app. The most recent example came in an interview with Holland-Kaye, CEO of London Heathrow airport, one of the main affected by the European air chaos.
Understand: he said the problems increased after videos that went viral on the social network. In them, users guide how passengers can escape the long check-in and security lines: requesting assistance in a wheelchair.
- The executive says that requests for this type of support have skyrocketed in recent weeks.
the case shows the power of TikTok, a network that has strength especially among children and young people and that has been worrying competitors.
What it does TikTok videos go viral so much? Why is the app so successful among young people? What are the risks associated with your algorithm?
- Australian journalist Avani Dias sought answers to these and other questions. The result is in the show “TikTok: The World’s Most Popular App”, available on Amazon Prime Video.
