China sets rules to guarantee application drivers’ rights

by

China defined on Tuesday (30) new rules to guarantee the rights of drivers in its gigantic industry of hitchhiking applications, requiring operators of these services to provide social insurance and disclose their profits.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport said that transport application companies must improve income distribution mechanisms. The ministry also said that anti-monopoly measures will be intensified against these companies and a “disorderly capital expansion” will be avoided in the sector.

The rules came after Chinese regulators in September told companies like Didi, Meituan, Alibaba, Ele.me and Tencent to improve the way they distribute revenue and guarantee rest periods for drivers and deliverymen.

Chinese regulators have harshly criticized their biggest tech companies this year for policies that exploit workers and infringe on consumer rights, as part of a campaign to exert more control over large areas of the economy after years of runaway growth.

In August, a Ministry of Transport official said the regulator would impose a cap on the percentage that platforms can charge drivers’ fees.

Chinese state media have also criticized Didi, the country’s main hitchhiking platform, for not paying drivers fairly.
