The indebtedness and default of Brazilian families rose again and hit a record in July, according to a survey released this Monday (8) by the CNC (National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism).
According to the survey, 78% of Brazilian families are in debt, and 29% are in arrears –highs of 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively, compared to June. The numbers are the highest since the survey began in 2010.
Both families with incomes above ten minimum wages and those that receive below this level saw their indebtedness grow in the last month. For the richest, obtaining debt grew by 0.8%, while in the second group the increase was 0.6%.
The share of defaulters who declared they were unable to pay off debts was 10.7% in July, above June (10.6%) and July 2021 (10.9%).
This group is mainly composed of consumers who did not complete high school (13%), who were also the ones who most needed to delay payments in the month of July (33.3%).
“The rise in default indicators, after a drop in April, May and June, indicates that extraordinary income support measures, such as extra withdrawals from the FGTS and the anticipation of the 13th salary to INSS beneficiaries, apparently had a momentary effect. in the payment of bills or debts already overdue, concentrated in the second quarter of this year”, pointed out in a note the president of CNC, José Roberto Tadros.
The proportion of women with debt increased by 0.5 percentage point between June and July, but it grew even more among men, by 1.0 point. The female public is currently the most indebted and, although indebtedness has been decelerating among women in recent months, in the year, the increase in the proportion of indebted was greater among women (+8.3 percentage points).
The number of households in debt on credit cards fell for the third month in July, a movement that again occurred among consumers in both income groups. Of the total indebtedness in the country, 85.4% have credit card debts, a proportion that had reached 88.8% in April this year.
