After meetings with the PT campaign, Sindimoto-SP (Sindicato dos Motoboys de São Paulo) is considering making a pro-Lula motorcycle “at an opportune moment of the election”, according to President Gilberto Almeida dos Santos.
“I had the idea of organizing a big motorcycle event, because the ones made by Bolsonaro are always with businessmen. We will do it with motoboys”, said the president, also known as Gil.
He did not formally present the idea to the PT. He says he has reservations about including Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Geraldo Akckmin (PSB) in the event due to their safety.
The topic was not discussed in the party. The former president has always criticized the stance of rival Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for promoting motorcycle riders with public money and at critical moments of the Covid-19 pandemic.
At an event in April, alongside Geraldo Alckmin, Lula waved to app workers by raising a flag for Sindimoto-SP.
Afterwards, two motoboys linked to the union were invited by the PT campaign to advertise “Que Brasil do você?”, which shows images of two Brazils, one associated with the Bolsonaro government and one targeted by Lula.
“They tried to find a solution by selling the idea that the companions who work with the app are small entrepreneurs, because it’s a beautiful word, everyone wants to be”, said Lula, in a speech, in which he also stated that it was impossible to be an entrepreneur “without money to take care of the family” and without rights such as leave and rest.
At the end of July, the board of SindimotoSP met with Alckmin. On the occasion, the candidate for vice president on Lula’s ticket signaled that, in his opinion, there is no need to create new laws to serve the category, but that it is necessary to protect labor laws.
The PT has the support of unionism for the election. One of the legend’s proposals is to discuss a reconfiguration of the role of unions in labor relations and the return of the obligation of these entities to participate in negotiations with companies, an amendment to the labor reform approved in the government of Michel Temer (MDB) in 2017.
