Bolsonaro calls the drop in diesel an ‘important act in favor of Brazil’ after receiving criticism in an act for democracy

by

Amid the most significant demonstration in defense of democracy under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the President of the Republic used social media to celebrate the reduction in the price of diesel.

The Chief Executive avoided commenting on the meeting at USP to read the letter in defense of the Democratic Rule of Law. He said, however, that “today a very important act took place in favor of Brazil and of great relevance to the Brazilian people: Petrobras reduced, once again, the price of diesel”.

The drop announced by the state-owned oil company this Thursday (11) was, on average, R$0.22 at refineries, from R$5.41 to R$5.19.

The drafting of the letter came after Bolsonaro made his biggest attack on the electronic voting system and the Electoral Justice, when he invited ambassadors from around the world to make a presentation with unfounded accusations of fraud in electronic voting machines.

Several artists, intellectuals, actors from the economic sector and society in general signed the manifesto, which already has more than 960 signatories.

This Thursday, the manifesto was read at an event at the USP Law School, with speeches against authoritarianism and threats by the president to institutions.

Bolsonaro has already attacked the movement several times and called the underwriters characterless and cock-faced and said that among them there are “mammal businessmen”.

The Minister of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira (PP), was more direct in his criticism of the letter on Thursday and also used the reduction in the price of fuel to address the matter.

“We are writing the Charter that changes Brazil for the better. Cheaper fuel, lower diesel prices! Deflation, increased employment! Strong economy, strong democracy! Congratulations Democrat Jair Bolsonaro!”

In addition to the letter organized by USP members, the demonstration in defense of democracy signed by entities such as Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo) and Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Banks) also had repercussions.

Faced with isolation by the movement that involved several civil society actors, Bolsonaro invited himself to go to Febraban this week.

At least three of Bolsonaro’s interlocutors, from the economic and political areas of the government, sought out leaders of the federation’s top leadership to arrange a meeting between him and the bankers. The representative went to the entity last Monday (8).

On the occasion, despite having criticized the electoral system, he did not offend or attack the guests, and dispensed with the use of adjectives such as “mammals”.
