Fuel Pass: Money in the bank for 7 out of 10 – In the “club of 4” with the most expensive gasoline in the EU, Greece

According to the Commission’s announcement, petrol prices have fallen significantly in the last 25 days, but in the rest of Europe they are falling faster

During the payment process for fuel pass 1, the finance staff found that 8/10 chose to receive the money which were entitled to their bank accounts instead of the immaterial card on their mobile phones. That’s why in the second version of the fuel pass they increased the bonus for choosing the immaterial card to €15.

But again the balance did not change almost none.

The analysis of the 2.1 million applications so far shows that 73% continue to prefer €65 to the bank over €80 to the mobile phone (for I.X. in mainland Greece). Aside from the convenience part (even those with the latest cell phones aren’t all familiar with their capabilities), the obvious answer to the phenomenon is that people want to leverage money and for other needs he has. Having the money in their bank account allows this flexibility unlike mobile money which cannot be leveraged elsewhere. THE Christos Staikouras however, speaking to OPEN, he added one more explanation. This drop in gasoline prices.

According to Commission announcement indeed petrol prices have fallen a lot in the last 25 days, but in the rest of Europe they are falling faster. The week ended with an average price of unleaded at €2.087/litre and the country is now in 2nd place after Finland regained the top spot. However, these 2 countries, together with the Netherlands and Denmark, do not stop to be the only ones which still have an average price of over €2.

In the Cyclades the average price is €2.35 and in the Dodecanese at €2.21. In Argolis, Grevena, Evrytania, Zakynthos, Heraklion, Corfu, Kefalonia, Lasithi, Lesbos, Lefkada, Magnesia, Rethymnon, Samos and Fokida, travelers of the three days of Panagia will find average prices over €2.1/litre.

In the diesel market – where the horizontal subsidy at the pump by 15 minutes also applies anyway – things work much more smoothly. Greece has the 11th most expensive price with €1,843/litre, just €1 above the European average. However, if the government decided tomorrow to withdraw the subsidy, then Greece would jump into the top 3 with the most expensive diesel prices behind only the Scandinavian countries, Sweden and Finland.

About 1 million beneficiaries based on the initial calculations of the Ministry of Finance have not yet submitted an application for fuel pass 2, a fact that is largely linked to the fact that the submission of the tax return is a condition where things are moving relatively slowly. The fuel pass 2 platform will close on August 29.
