European countries show at present no interest in peace, and do nothing to promote it. Instead, their leaders are only encouraging Kiev to continue military operations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov argued on Tuesday.
“Right now, Europeans are not really focused on peace and are doing little to achieve it,” Peskov said, commenting on reports by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service that European NATO members are continuing extensive preparations for a possible armed conflict with Russia.
According to Peskov, the European countries “they instead encourage the Kiev regime to continue the war by any means possible.”
The Kremlin also said it was unclear when a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin aimed at ending the war in Ukraine would take place, and that no dates had been announced by either side.
Trump has repeatedly said he wants to end the war in Ukraine, Europe’s bloodiest since World War II, although he has commented that achieving peace is more difficult than achieving a ceasefire in Gaza or ending the India-Pakistan conflict.
After speaking with Putin on October 16, Trump said his Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov would meet this week ahead of a possible summit in Budapest within two weeks.
Moscow did not give any dates. But CNN cited an unnamed White House official as saying the expected Rubio-Lavrov meeting is on hold for now.
He cited a source as saying Rubio and Lavrov have divergent expectations about a possible end to the war.
Lavrov told reporters he had agreed with Rubio to continue telephone contacts, while the Kremlin called it impossible to postpone a session for which no date has been set.
“Listen, we have the agreement of the presidents, but we cannot postpone what is not finalized. Neither President Trump nor President Putin gave exact dates. We need preparation, serious preparation. This may take time. This is essentially why no exact dates were given in the first place.”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Asked if Moscow knows a possible date for the summit, Peskov replied: “No we don’t know.”
