The 0.1% decline in the Brazilian GDP and the stagnation of the industry in the third quarter of the year reinforce the pessimism among entrepreneurs with the economic recovery in 2022.Para
José Ricardo Roriz, president of Abiplast (Brazilian Association of the Plastics Industry), the result of the third quarter “is gone”. “It is unlikely that the last quarter will bring a result much higher, to the point of making the GDP for the year close above 4%. This performance only restores what we lost in the pandemic”, he says
Roriz claims that the stagnation maintains a negative scenario for the industry, which is still facing shortages and rising prices for raw materials, in addition to bottlenecks with international freight.
Fernando Pimentel, president of Abit (Brazilian Textile Industry Association), also says that the result of the GDP is not good, but considers it “bare force” to speak of a technical recession.
“We are feeling that Black Friday was not a big deal and we are waiting for Christmas. It has some favorable expectations, but the country cannot go from election to election, paralyzing what has to be done. It is a warning sign for the leaders”, it says.
He assesses that political and institutional noises make the environment volatile to attract investments and grow in 2022, and that the new variant of Covid-19 is already hampering the economic recovery.
José Carlos Martins, president of CBIC (Brazilian Chamber of Construction Industry), expected a positive result for the National GDP.
The construction sector advanced 3.9% in the third quarter of the year compared to the previous period and should reach the 5% growth forecast for 2021, according to Martins.
But he explains that the construction results are always later, as there is a gap of months between the negotiation and the delivery of the finished property — and, therefore, the drop in property sales in the last quarter, for example, should spill over more forward in the sector’s GDP.
João Dornellas, executive president of Abia (of the food industry), highlights the sector’s performance in the quarter, which had a 2.8% increase in sales compared to the previous period and 2.1% compared to the same quarter in 2020 .
