The Competition Commission has multiplied its investments in technological infrastructure in the last three years, according to the president of the Competition Commission
“In 2021 we had the most checks in the entire European Union. We will probably have the same results this year” notes the president of the Competition Commission, Yiannis Lianos, in a post on social media.
The president adds that in the last two years there have been more audits than ever before at the Competition Commission. In detail the president states:
Because the numbers speak for themselves, and because some write without looking at them: the on-site inspections of the EP. have increased compared to Sept. 2019 when I took over by +100%. In the last 2 years, there have been more checks than ever in EP…1/7

“Because the numbers speak for themselves, and because some write without looking at them: the on-site inspections of the Competition Commission have increased compared to September 2019 when I took over by +100%. In the last 2 years there have been more audits than ever before at the Competition Commission. In 2021 we had the most checks in the entire European Union. We will probably have the same results this year.
Over the last three years we have audited sectors some of which have never been audited before: banking, construction, fuel, supermarkets, electricity with the results of these investigations already published and others to be published in the coming months
Since 2019 our staff has grown by approximately 4%. Doing the math now: +100% more audits with only 4% more staff…. Can we do more audits? With more staff yes. The equation is simple.
We currently fill 37% of our organizational positions with active employees (ie not seconded elsewhere). There is a limit to increasing the productivity of existing staff. But audits aren’t just about personnel, they’re also about investing in technology.
The Competition Commission has multiplied over the last three years its investments in technological infrastructure, so that we can overcome the tragic technological lag we have found. We now have 3 data unsealing rooms (from 1 in 2019) to move cases faster AI software for more efficient data analysis, a dedicated data science lab to create software for our research (R&D), 1 unique data collection and processing platform Big Data like no other in Europe.
With the completion of the Competition Commission’s investment program in technological equipment and staff training, we are among the first Competition Commissions in Europe in forensics. All this with a 4.5 million euro return to the state budget in 2020/2021, the 1st time since 2016″.
