“Electric shock” from electricity supplier prices: Tomorrow the government’s announcements on subsidies

by

Information from the market indicates that the starting price per kilowatt hour for the next month may even escalate to 80 cents, although lower charges are also expected from individual suppliers.

Nominal electricity prices are expected to be increased compared to August for September, which are to be announced by tomorrow, August 20.

However, the final prices that will apply to consumers will depend on the amount of the subsidy to be announced by the government.

Information from the market indicates that the initial kilowatt-hour price for the next month may even escalate up to 80 minutes although lower charges are also expected from individual suppliers.

It is recalled that for August the initial price from most suppliers ranged between 48 and 50 minutes and “landed” at 15-17 minutes after the state support formed this month at 33.7 minutes per kilowatt hour.

For the same month (August), the total subsidy from the Government approaches 1.136 billion euros, absorbing up to 90% of the increase for all household consumers for the total monthly consumption and for main and non-main residences, the 100% of the increase for CTO beneficiaries, 80% of the increase for SMEs with power supply up to 35 kVa, and 82-99% of the increase for farmers.

Information indicates that the government’s aim for September is to final consumer prices are maintained close to August levels, which means that the government subsidy should be correspondingly increased.

However, it is noted that with the imposition of a ceiling on the compensation prices of electricity producers that has been in effect since July, the increased electricity prices on the Stock Exchange also increase the funds available to the Energy Transition Fund for subsidizing consumers.

According to the current framework, suppliers announce by the 20th of each month the tariffs that will be applied the following, thus providing the scope for consumers to change supplier, a process that also with the current framework is done without conditions.

The high energy prices for September are due to the rise in prices on the Energy Exchange, which is a result of the jump in international natural gas prices.

The price for gas on the Dutch stock exchange today is close to 250 euros per megawatt hour, while the price of electricity on the Greek stock exchange for today closed at 449.14 euros per megawatt hour, pressured by the high prices of natural gas, the rise of demand due to high temperatures and the reduced contribution of renewable energy sources in meeting demand.
