Ministry of Justice tries to create aid for families of police officers after veto the readjustment

by

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security seeks to create an aid to cover families of federal police officers, federal highway officers and criminals who died or who have retired due to disability.

The measure is being discussed at a time when the categories are dissatisfied with the government, after the non-fulfillment of the promise of readjustment and restructuring of careers.

For members of the portfolio, the aid would be an important gesture to the police, who are considered members of the voter base of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is seeking reelection.

The request from the Ministry of Justice to the Ministry of Economy is from April this year. The intention is for it to be executed in 2022, at a cost of R$ 6.5 million per year.

Members of Minister Anderson Torres’ portfolio claim that the amount would not be used in full, and that, politically, it would be important for the government.

On the other hand, aid encounters resistance in the economy. Minister Paulo Guedes’ team says that there must be compensation for the creation of a permanent expense in order not to breach the Fiscal Responsibility Law.

That compensation would need to be a permanent cut of another expense or an increase in income.

During the Bolsonaro government, associations representing delegates, experts and federal agents fought for restructuring the careers of police officers, something that did not happen.

The repeated failure to fulfill promises by the government made the associations publish notes, in recent months, criticizing the government and Bolsonaro directly.

In one of them, they said that the president promotes “negligence”, “abandonment” and “disdain” to members of the security forces.

Bolsonaro also promised to grant a 5% increase to all federal careers, which would rule out the restructuring promised to federal public security categories. But that didn’t happen either.

Currently, police officers who work in the National Force are entitled to compensation of R$ 100,000 in the case of disabling disability for work. The family is also entitled to the same amount in the event of the death of this agent.

Federal police officers, federal highway officers, civil and military officers who are working in the National Force can be covered by this aid. In this case, the source of funding is the National Public Security Fund.

With less than 45 days to go before the election, Bolsonaro is in second place in polls. The most recent Datafolha, released on Thursday (18), shows former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with a 15-point advantage over Bolsonaro.

The PT has 47% against 32% of the chief executive in the first round.
