Staikouras to exit from enhanced supervision: A significant achievement with multiple benefits

“Thus, the achievement of the last major goal, which is the recovery of the investment grade, comes closer” emphasizes the Minister of Finance

An important achievement with multiple benefits is characterized by the Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras, the exit from the Enhanced Supervision regime.

“As of today, Greece is officially outside the Enhanced Surveillance regime. A regime it had entered, alone in Europe, in 2018. Our country, after 12 years, returns to European normality and ceases to be the exception in the Eurozone. A key national goal achieved!” emphasizes the Minister of Finance.

According to Mr. Staikouras, this important achievement is a fruit and recognition:

• the great efforts and enormous sacrifices of the Greek citizens,
• the significant efforts of the economic, social and political structures of Greek society,
• the correct, responsible, reliable and – as has been recognized internationally – effective economic policy of the Government of the New Republic.

This development, the minister emphasizes, has multiple benefits for the country:

• Closes, in combination with the early repayment of loans from the International Monetary Fund and the lifting of capital restrictions, a painful chapter for Greece.
• Strengthens the country’s position in international markets.
• It provides an additional boost to the development dynamics of our country and the attraction of investments.
• It grants degrees of freedom in the exercise of economic policy, within the framework of course of the rules that apply to all European member states.
• It demonstrates the dynamics that the Greek economy has acquired since, despite the unprecedented external difficulties, the country is achieving the goals it sets.

Thus, continues Christos Staikouras, the achievement of the last major goal is getting closer, which is the investment grade recovery, after the 11 upgrades of the Greek economy in the last three years.

“We continue, with determination, plan and confidence in the capabilities of our country, but also fully aware of the challenges we face. We must continue in a climate of creation, with prudence and hard work, in order to make Greece stronger on all sides and its economy more dynamic, productive, extroverted and socially fair” concludes the Minister of Finance.
