Lula promises businessmen to take back My House, My Life

by

In a meeting with civil construction entrepreneurs early this Tuesday night (23), the candidate for president of the Republic and former president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said that he will resume the Minha Casa, Minha Vida program if he returns to the highest charge of the Plateau.

“If we win the elections, the first thing I want to do and tell you is that Minha Casa, Minha Vida will go back to being a government program.”

“Because who is being harmed right now is exactly the lowest-income part, which is most vulnerable and the one that most needs a home in this country,” he said at a press conference before the meeting.

The housing program was one of the hallmarks of the Lula government and was part of the PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), which in an eventual new PT mandate should earn an environmental seal, with a focus on decarbonization.

Dedicated to building houses for low-income families who could not afford to finance their own property, Minha Casa, Minha Vida reduced terms, rates and created new lines of financing.

It was phased out last year, when the current president and reelection candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, created the replacement program Casa Verde e Amarela.

By extinguishing Minha Casa, Minha Vida, the Bolsonaro government ended the conditions given to tier 1 of the former PT brand program. This segment was for families with a gross income of up to R$1,800 per month (amount used in 2020), who could sign contracts with a subsidy of up to 90% of the property value, without interest.

“The State needs to surround itself with economic possibilities and use its banks to help, through the Union Budget or through financing, to ensure that houses can be built”, said Lula.

Lula also said that if he wins the election, in the first week after taking office, he wants to meet with all the governors.

“I want each governor to indicate which are the three or four most important infrastructure projects in their state. Possibly later we will meet with the mayors of the capitals”, said Lula.

The objective, said the PT, is to start a large financing program.

“There are many works that were paralyzed after the PAC stopped being fed as a policy designed and carried out by the government. We are going to resume all the works that are able to be resumed.”

Aloisio Mercadante, coordinator of the former president’s government program, accompanied Lula to the meeting with the deputy on the ticket, Geraldo Alckmin, and said that a possible new PT federal government will reheat the FGTS (guarantee fund), after the successive and recent withdrawals released to workers on an emergency basis.

TAX REFORM

Lula reaffirmed the campaign project to generate jobs and reduce taxes.

“Job generation is an obsession, because it [trabalhador] becomes a consumer, is no longer dependent on the state”, said the candidate.

“It is entirely possible for us to make a tax policy that relieves investments, and that can guarantee that there is more justice in the land tax policy in this country,” Lula told the businessmen.

For Mercadante it is necessary to “reduce indirect taxes and increase taxes on income and wealth”. “Especially about income,” he said.

“We have an agenda for the future that we can discuss in terms of tax reform. How to have a simpler, more efficient structure that reduces bureaucracy in companies’ lives, reduces costs, reduces payroll taxes at the same time, from our point of view point of view, which has progressiveness”, said the former minister.
