Presidential candidate Ciro Gomes (PDT) promised to create an “anti-agency law”, through which citizens who pay the equivalent of twice their debt would have their debt settled.
In practice, the proposal could mean a credit tabulation, although Ciro has not detailed his idea, presented in the final minute of the interview with TV Globo’s Jornal Nacional, on Tuesday night (23).
Shortly after the program, his campaign released a note in which he stated that the law was intended to protect the people from the abuse of interest on bank loans.
“Brazil has been charging the highest interest rates in the world for years. This explains why four Brazilian banks are among the most profitable in the world. value of a loan or a debt that people have on their credit card or overdraft. That is, if you took R$100 and already paid R$200, the debt is automatically paid off”, said Ciro Gomes in a note.
He claims that this type of law already exists, for example, in England. “Here in Brazil, they oblige people to pay up to ten times a debt. Why can’t there be control of interest and exorbitant fines in Brazil?”, asks the candidate.
“I will look to those who have little, freeing people from debt bondage.”
Ciro, who was interviewed by William Bonner and Renata Vasconcellos at Globo’s studios in Rio de Janeiro, for about 40 minutes, also defended unifying benefits such as rural retirement, unemployment insurance, the BPC (which benefits poor elderly people) and all social programs such as Bolsa FamÃlia and AuxÃlio Brasil on a minimum income. He stated that the objective is to include this income in Social Security, which would give constitutional security to those contemplated.
The minimum income program, named in honor of PT councilor Eduardo Suplicy, is the flagship of Ciro’s campaign and intends to pay around R$ 1,000 a month to around 60 million people.
According to Ciro, the cost of the benefit would be covered by a tax on the super-rich — those with assets above R$20 million.
“With just 50 cents for every R$100 they have, each super-rich will finance the minimum income of the poorest 821 Brazilians”, said the candidate.
.
The candidate also promised to protect the Manaus Free Trade Zone and stated that the best way to avoid deforestation in the Amazon is to provide economic alternatives to the residents of the meeting.
Regarding the plan to generate 5 million jobs, he said that the vacancies will come from the resumption of stopped works, slope containment and sanitation infrastructure.
Although his government plan did not address privatization — an issue that strongly divides candidates Lula (PT), who is against it, and Bolsonaro (PL), who is in favor —, Ciro said that handing sanitation over to the private sector could lead to inequality of care.
According to him, the sanitation framework approved two years ago was a step forward, but the state needs to be responsible for planning.
Despite being parked in third place in the polls, the PDT candidate intends to maintain the strategy of placing himself as an alternative to the political polarization between Lula (PT) and Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who lead the dispute.
A Datafolha poll released on Thursday (18) shows that Ciro maintains 7% — far from the PT, with 47%, and the current president, with 32%. This is the same percentage registered by the pedestrian in the survey released at the end of May.
Bolsonaro was the first to be interviewed by Jornal Nacional, among the best-placed candidates for the Presidency of the Republic.
During the week, candidates Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from PT (25th, Thursday) and Simone Tebet, from PMDB (26th, Friday) will still be received.
