Bolsonaro backs off and says ‘banks have lost almost nothing with Pix’

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) backtracked this Tuesday (30) from previous statements and said that “the banks have lost almost nothing” with the creation of Pix.

In late July, Bolsonaro had declared that bankers’ adherence to the letter for democracy was retaliation for the institution of the new financial movement mechanism.

“You can see, this business of letters to Brazilians, to democracy, the bankers are sponsoring. It’s the Pix that I hit them with, the digital banks that we facilitate,” the president then told supporters in the playpen at Palácio da Alvorada.

This Tuesday, he said at an event with presidential candidates organized by the Union of Entities for Commerce and Services: “Banks have lost almost nothing from that because they won 6 million accounts and banks have mechanisms to ensure that their profit does not decrease.”

Bolsonaro’s previous position, that bankers had lost with Pix, was then endorsed by the Minister of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira. “So, President, if you make someone lose 40 billion a year to benefit Brazilians, it is not surprising that the injured party signs a manifesto against you,” he wrote on social media.

Before Bolsonaro’s retreat, the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, had already declared that the reasoning that financial institutions lost money with Pix made no sense.

This Tuesday, Bolsonaro followed the same line as Neto. “Nobody wants to interfere in a bank, this has to do with the fee it charges on a loan issue and I believe that free market is the best way for us to live in peace and harmony and not dream anymore, but be sure of progress,” Bolsonaro said. .
