It was preceded by an announcement by Gazprom that it has “completely” suspended natural gas deliveries to Europe via Nord Stream 1 due to maintenance work that will last three days.

Today, natural gas prices on the international markets fluctuate in the region of 280 euros per megawatt hour, recording an increase of 6%.

It was preceded by an announcement by the Russian energy giant Gazprom that it has “completely” suspended natural gas deliveries to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline due to maintenance work that will last three days.

Yesterday, Tuesday, prices fell as low as 245 euros, in the wake of announcements by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for intervention in the energy market and for a faster increase in European reserves.

What Gazprom announced

Russian energy giant Gazprom announced today that it has “completely” suspended gas deliveries to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline due to maintenance work expected to last three days.

Work “on a gas compression station has begun,” the Russian company said in a statement posted on Telegram.

For his part, the head of Germany’s Federal Network Agency Klaus Müller estimated that Berlin is now better prepared to suspend deliveries via Nord Stream as the country’s strategic natural gas reserves are almost 85% full.

“In the winter we can get gas from the reserves, we are saving gas (and we must continue!), the LNG terminals are coming and thanks to Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway (and soon France) the gas is flowing “, Miller pointed out on Twitter.

Gazprom had warned of suspending natural gas deliveries via Nord Stream for “essential” work at a compression station on the pipeline that links gas fields in Siberia to northern Germany, from where it is exported to other European countries.

According to the announcement of the Russian company, the maintenance work is scheduled to last until 03:00 on Saturday morning Greek time.

Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, energy has been at the center of a standoff between Russia and the West, which often accuses Moscow of using natural gas as a “weapon”.

Gazprom has cut gas deliveries via Nord Stream by 80% in recent months.
