Staikouras from Thessaloniki: There will be other measures to support society, permanent and not

by

Mr. Staikouras pointed out that the policy of the Ministry of Finance is implemented through “significant reductions in taxes and insurance contributions, significantly relieving citizens and businesses from the high burdens of the previous decade, but also having proceeded with a number of structural changes with multiple benefits for society and the economy”.

“In the economic field, so far the State has supported society with measures amounting to 50 billion euros, and obviously there will be more for this year and for next year, permanent and non-permanent measures.” The above was emphasized by Finance Minister Christos Staikouras, speaking at a party event at the Thessaloniki City Hall.

Referring to the challenges of the last few years, he observed that “we are one of the few countries that took advantage of the crises together, so as to build stronger foundations in the Greek economy, which is why we have higher endurance and greater dynamics. We turned difficulties into opportunities, and despite the circumstances, we managed together to implement a coherent, dynamic, comprehensive and realistically ambitious plan.”

Taking stock of the structural reforms of the Greek economy that have progressed over the past three years, Mr. Staikouras assured that “we continue with the same vigor our reform work, now making use of other important tools, such as the Recovery and Resilience Fund, an important development tool with specific schedules”. He also reminded that the largest percentage of investment resources that will be available to Greece in the coming years will come from the NSRF, “so, let’s not forget one tool and focus on the other, because we will have 12 billion euros per year in the next five years, when until today we had half the resources”. That is why “we must work hard, methodically, with prudence, coherence, realism and insight”.

As he added, the reforms aim at “a productive, efficient, effective digital and above all just state, a state that will take care of and intervene for the optimal functioning of the market mechanism, ensuring the maximum possible economic efficiency and the socially just distribution of income and the wealth produced”.

Speaking about the productive reconstruction of the country, Mr. Staikouras pointed out that Greece records investment and export records every year. “This year, in the first half of 2022, we have as much foreign investment as we had in 2021, while in 2000 we had a decade-long record. This year our exports, mainly to Northern Greece, are at 41% of GDP, when a decade ago they were at 20%. For the sustainability of growth, this means that even if something is not going well here internally, businesses have built strong dykes worldwide, we have passed all the countries of the South in percentage and have reached Portugal. Essentially, for two years now, the growth of the economy has been sustainable, we have a very large increase in investment and exports, which can and does give lines of defense to businesses to be able to cope with other major difficulties”, he explained.

K. Tsiaras: “We are implementing the largest program for electronic justice”

Speaker at the same event, the Minister of Justice, Kostas Tsiaras, spoke about the reforms made in the previous three years in the field of Justice. As he explained, “one by one we implemented all the commitments of the country that were pending in the memorandum, or of the enhanced supervision, but we also included in the spirit of the changes agreed with the institutions, our own government priorities, making our justice system more functional, more reliable and arguably faster.”

“We have implemented and are implementing the largest program for electronic justice that has ever been implemented in the Greek justice system. With the expansion of the integrated system for the management of arbitration cases, the upgrade and expansion of the integrated system for the management of civil and criminal cases, and the integrated system of the Court of Auditors”, he pointed out.

Regarding the development of new digital applications that facilitate the daily life of citizens, Mr. Tsiaras referred, among other things, to the single certificate of solvency and electronic certificates (noting that “over 1.2 million certificates were issued electronically during the pandemic”) , electronic boards, the expansion of digital recording in criminal courts, and electronic filing of records. Regarding the digital trials, he announced that in a few days a relevant presentation will be made, jointly with the Ministry of Digital Governance.

“At the same time, in the Ministry of Justice we have implemented a series of additional reforms, such as the special departments for adjudicating cases, which have a very strong development sign, while in the next period of time the establishment of the office for collecting and processing statistics for Justice will be completed, which is also explicitly mentioned in the enhanced supervision report, as a necessary tool to draw up a new credible reform roadmap for Justice, now supported by the additional resources of the Recovery and Resilience Fund”, he added.

Specializing in the planning regarding the extraction of resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, Mr. Tsiaras clarified that these are “very specific proposals, which will upgrade our judicial system, will give a big boost in the direction of utilization, we will be able to educate and train personnel who support the functioning of justice, judicial officers and judicial employees, and we will greatly strengthen the infrastructure of justice.”

Regarding infrastructure upgrades, he noted that “Macedonia in particular has the lion’s share”, as “the new courthouses in Kilkis, Edessa, Serres, the serious reconstruction and reconstruction of the Thessaloniki courthouse, are money which are used mainly by the Recovery Fund”.

The event, which was organized by the secretariat of Scientific Organizations and the secretariat of Special Party Organizations of the ND, was coordinated by the secretary of Scientific Organizations of the ND Simos Psomiadis, representatives of the scientific associations of the city were appointed, specifically the president of the Thessaloniki Bar Association Dimitris Finokaliotis, the president of the Finance Chamber of Central Macedonia, Vassilis Georgiadis, the president of TEE/TKM Giorgos Tsakoumis and the president of the Medical Association of Thessaloniki, Nikos Nitsas.
