Guedes criticizes ‘excesses’ of the Judiciary, pins Faria Lima and talks about maintaining Auxílio Brasil

by

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, criticized “excesses” of the Judiciary, needled members of the financial market and spoke of maintaining Auxílio Brasil during a lecture to businessmen this Wednesday (14). The event took place at the ACRJ (Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro) headquarters, in the center of the state capital.

Guedes also said that the spending ceiling was “poorly designed”. “They forgot to make the walls, which are the renovations. They forgot to break the floor, which goes up”, he said.

In recent weeks, the minister has embarked for good on the campaign of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). On the eve of the elections, he has been out in the field, in meetings with businessmen, to counter criticisms and defend policies adopted under his management. This Wednesday was no different.

Without citing the name of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), a recurring target of Bolsonaro’s attacks, Guedes pointed out “excesses” in the Judiciary.

“There is a minister of the Judiciary who also commits excesses, orders arrest, investigation, censorship. He is discrediting the Supreme Court.”

The minister also stated that the country “has money” to maintain Auxílio Brasil, which rose to R$600 on the eve of the elections. “Shall we keep it? Come on, of course. The country has money.”

As reported by the Sheetthe maintenance of R$ 600 of Auxílio Brasil represents a need for changes in the spending ceiling — a constitutional rule that prevents federal expenses from growing above inflation.

Before sending the 2023 Budget proposal, which put the government in the firing line for cuts in social programs, Guedes adopted a more moderate speech in relation to Auxílio Brasil.

He scolded Faria Lima, a region of São Paulo that concentrates companies in the financial market and said that, when it comes to releasing resources for the “weakest”, Faria Lima comes to a boil, fearing inflation.

Guedes also highlighted the recent performance of the Brazilian economy, which led analysts to raise their GDP (Gross Domestic Product) projections. The minister, however, did not mention issues such as the increase in hunger, the rise in inflation and the fall in income from work during the pandemic.

During the lecture, the minister reinforced criticism of PT governments. Without mentioning the name of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), ahead of Bolsonaro in polls, the minister said that Brazil has benefited from the international scenario in the past and stated that people dream of a ” lost paradise”.

“Liberals and conservatives are together because, on the other side, is the devil”, he pointed out. On more than one occasion, Guedes received applause from businesspeople in the audience.
