Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Federal Supreme Court) this Friday (16) restored the effectiveness of the decree that reduced by 35% the IPI (Tax on Industrialized Products) of thousands of products manufactured in Brazil.
The measure ran into an ADI (Direct Action of Unconstitutionality) filed in May by Solidarity and the bench of deputies from Amazonas, who said that the measure harmed the attractiveness of the Manaus Free Zone. According to the text, companies in the region would lose competitiveness with the reduction of rates in the rest of the country.
To unlock the decree and end the impasse, the government edited, last month, a new wording shielding 170 products produced in the Free Zone.
In this Friday’s decision (16), Moraes revokes the precautionary measure granted in May and says that the legal problem caused by the decree was resolved with the new government text.
